Democratic leaders picked Warrensville Heights Mayor Marcia Fudge to replace U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones on the November ballot.

Party leaders held the special meeting Thursday night at Euclid High School to pick a nominee.

Warrensville Heights Mayor Marcia Fudge, a former chief of staff to Tubbs Jones, was endorsed by Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and former congressman Louis Stokes.

Fudge was also endorsed Thursday by the Black Elected Democrats of Cleveland.

The 11th District is reliably safe for Democrats. The nominee will face Republican Thomas Pekarek, who has run unsuccessfully for public office numerous times.

Tubbs Jones, 58, died Aug. 20 from a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm.

The others interested in the position are: Former attorney and Cleveland City Councilman Bill Patmon; state Rep. C.J. Prentiss, Jeffrey Johnson, Melody Stewart, Municipal Judge Michael Ryan, Rev. Marvin McMickle.
